Who are the 144000 Mentioned in Revelation 14?

WHO ARE THE 144,000 MENTIONED IN REVELATION 14?

PASSAGE 

"Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. 3 They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. 4 These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was found no deceit, for they are without fault before the throne of God." (Revelation 14:1-5). 

ANALYSIS 

While it is difficult to determine with absolute certainty who the 144000 are, there are some hints in the text that cannot be ignored. The mention of the Lamb in v.1 strongly suggests that this is the redeemed church which was caught up from the earth (v.4). 

The figure could be a symbolic representation of the entire set of believers redeemed by Jesus Christ. This scene appears to be a symbolic reference to heaven. Notice that the twenty four elders are also mentioned in Revelation 5 where they worshipped before the throne of God and before the Lamb. 

The mention of the twelve tribes of Israel could therefore be an allegorical reference to the diversity of these faithful saints gathered before Christ in heaven rather than a literal reference to Jewish believers. 

Their virginity of the men could symbolize the priesthood and chastity of these believers, a significant virtue for the redeemed in Christ (cf. 1 Peter 2:9). 

While John may have been writing to a primarily Jewish audience who perhaps understood these symbolisms and imagery better than we do, I am persuaded that this imagery most probably describes the triumphant church in heaven.

Here's why...

Revelation 5:9-10 says:

And they sang a new song, saying: 

“You are worthy to take the scroll,

And to open its seals;

For You were slain,

And have redeemed us to God by Your blood

Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,

10 And have made us kings and priests to our God;

And we shall reign on the earth." (NKJV)

Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life will make it to the presence of God in heaven (John 1:12, 3:16-18; Revelation 20:11-15).
