What Does it Mean to Strengthen Our Feeble Arms and Weak Knees?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO STRENGTHEN OUR FEEBLE ARMS AND WEAK KNEES?

Hebrews 12:12-17 says: "Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed. 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears." (NKJV). 

The writer of Hebrews encourages believers to focus on growing and renewing their spiritual vitality by consistently trusting God even in the most difficult circumstances of life, including Christian persecution. This is because some believers had slackened in their faith and some were in danger of falling away. 

Their spiritual condition is captured in v.12. Their hands hung down and their feet were feeble. This suggests that the Hebrew believers had been totally discouraged in their faith. They were trapped in some inertia, unable to make progress at all. They were facing spiritual stagnation and were in danger of slipping away from the faith if nothing was done to address their circumstances. 

This statement could also suggest that these believers no longer focused on serving God in the manner they used to. They may have abandoned their calling to serve God in their communities of context. 

Bible scholars believe the Hebrew believers that the writer addressed had undergone severe persecution during the New Testament church period, and some had considered turning back to Judaism. 

The warning conveyed in Hebrews 2:1-4 strongly suggests that this danger was legitimate and perhaps imminent. The writer says: "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?" (NKJV). 

The warning in vv.2-3 is above is compelling. The writer reminds them about the exhortations that had been given to them in the past, asking them to firmly embrace them lest they drifted away from the faith. He also reminds them about the gospel that Jesus Himself had proclaimed and the signs and wonders that accompanied the preaching of the gospel. This was a possibly a reference to the signs and wonders that God manifested during the period of the Acts of the Apostles.

The above exhortation reminds us that our journey of faith in Christ should be fortified by unflinching faith and covenant faithfulness. It also reminds the reader that our calling in Christ comes with sacrifices that we should be prepared to pay in obedience to Christ. 

The following dangers conveyed in the Book of Hebrews are also significant in understanding the meaning of Hebrews 12:12 

The danger of unbelief (Hebrews 3:7-4:13).

 

The danger of falling away (Hebrews 5:11-6:12). 

The danger of shrinking into sinful disobedience (Hebrews 10:19-39). 

The danger of rejecting God (Hebrews 12:25-29). 

After reading through the above passages in the Book of Hebrews, the reader discovers and appreciates the meaning conveyed in Hebrews 12:12. 

This message also speaks to believers who may be undergoing severe persecution and other afflictions of life in their societies of context. They should not give up on the faith but place their trust in Jesus. His grace is sufficient for us (2 Corinthians 12:9).
